In the second of our three-part stroll along the different routes to publication, the Singapore-based writer, musician and TV producer Marc Heal shares his experience of crowd-funding.
The English county of Sussex – pretty, wealthy, genteel – is not a place you’d expect to encounter the occult. But when Marc Heal was a teenager, his community was rocked by scandal after a local priest claimed to have uncovered a Satanic cabal at the heart of the British establishment.
Years laters, in a hiatus from his successful career as a musician, Marc revisited the story – unearthing forgotten documents and his own fragmented memories of that time – and started writing a book. The Sussex Devils is a genre-bending mixture of mystery and memoir that proved hard to sell to mainstream publishers. Instead, Marc crowd-funded the project through Unbound.
In this podcast, Jo Furniss started by asking Marc about the true story of The Sussex Devils.
