China’s Communist Party leaders adopted the one-child policy in 1980, in the hope that curbing birth-rates would help bring up the country’s poorest and increase the country’s global stature. Now, as China closes the book on the policy after more than three decades, the country faces an aging and male dominated population, with a diminished supply of young workers.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of One Child, Mei Fong, spent years documenting the one-child policy’s repercussions on every sector of Chinese society. She travelled across China to meet the people who live with its consequences. The stories of the locals reveal a dystopian reality: unauthorized second children disregarded by the state, only-children supporting aging parents and grandparents on their own, villages teeming with ineligible bachelors, and an ungoverned adoption market stretching across the globe.

If you wish to learn more about the intimate investigations of the world’s largest experiment in social engineering, be sure to join us for this event with Mei Fong, as she makes a special appearance at Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store on Saturday, 16th July, 3.30 p.m., to share with you a little more about this compelling book.
