Workshop: Other Voices, Other Lives
February 18 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

by Zhang Ruihe
A workshop series focused on the dramatic monologue as a poetic form. Participants will look at the use of poetic personas, both for exploring our own deepest thoughts and emotions, and also as a means of getting us all out of our “bubbles” and listening to The Other – something absolutely necessary in our day and age.
The first workshop, dated 18 Feb, will focus on the reading of classic and not-so-classic-but-still- brilliant dramatic monologues to give participants a sense of what is possible with the form. There will be short writing exercises based on the poems we read, as well as a discussion on what it means to write in the voice of an Other. Participants will then be assigned to write a dramatic monologue, using the voice of either a historical figure, literary character, or real-life personality.
The second workshop, dated 4 Mar, will adopt a more traditional workshop format, where people bring their work for comment, feedback and discussion. Ruihe will facilitate, teach, and offer tips on how to do present your work at readings and other public events.
